Telus to launch GSM Pre and Pixi in January?

The Pixi is about to launch this Sunday November 15, on Sprint. There hasn't been any word on when it will come out internationally or when the GSM Pixi will be available yet but, according to Mobile Syrup the Pixi and Pre will be arriving on Telus (Bell's brand new shared HSPA network) in January 2010. Along with the new and already wide spread Bell & Telus HSPA Network infrastructure roll out this is good for the network and Palm.
(We know those are Sprint phones in the photo. Still awesome though!)
Read on after the break...
Bell has been in an epic battle of catch-up with Rogers as far as quality smartphones go because Rogers had exclusivity on the iPhone so long. Also Rogers GSM network was desirable over the CDMA network Bell had because of the international compatibility of the base bands. That has taken a complete 360 degree turn this week. Bell just launched their HSPA network with Telus and though it was expected they would only have a small coverage area to start and most users would need some sort of hybrid CDMA/GSM phone, that is simply just not the case. Telus 3G already covers more of Canada than Rogers "mature" 3G network on opening day. They will have the newest lineup of BlackBerries, the iPhone, and in January 2010, the Palm Pixi and Palm Pre. Basically making them the leader in the smartphone line up in Canada unless Rogers is going to be getting the Pre or the Motorola Milestone (AKA Droid).
This is fantastic news for Canadians who didn't want to switch to Bell's CDMA network and wanted the GSM version of the Pre, or for those who were lusting over Palm's new Pixi and didn't know when it might come out. This also is great news for AT&T customers who want to get their hands on the Palm Pre or Pixi because Telus' HSPA network is the same 3G baseband as AT&T. You can bring your unlocked device down from Canada and have a working GSM Pre with 3G speeds rather than the slower Edge network. If this holds true and stays on schedule aligned with the rumored Verizon Pre launch and the possible old rumored AT&T Pixi launch, Palm will be making a huge stand in in the smartphone marketshare war byearly 2010 and get their name on the front page of every news or blog site once again. Until then lets just hope Palm can get some WebOS version unity world wide going onsometime soon. We of course will give more details as soon as we get them.

Ilve been an extremely happy Pre owner on Bell since launch. This is great news for Palm and for Canadians. The gap between product releases in the US and Canada is slowly disappearing.
