Skype Not Coming to Palm Pre, Just Yet

According to a press release statement, Skype is not going to be available on the Palm Pre at least for the forseeable future. In a statement released by a Skype executive, it is stated that they will continue to keep their eye on the Palm's Pre and webOS platform. So for all of your 440 million+ Skyper's out  there, not so much (good news).

“We are focused on delivering the best Skype experience for mobile consumers that we can, across any cell phone or mobile operating system. If someone has a cell phone, we want them to be able to use Skype on it. That’s our vision and we’ve already delivered new mobile applications for Windows Mobile, Java-enabled cell phones, Android-powered devices and the iPhone in the first half of 2009. As things are evolving quickly in this space, we will continue to keep our eye on Palm’s Pre and webOS platform, which seems to be getting good traction in its first weekend. But we have nothing to announce at this time.”

This is what I'm afraid of, waiting to see if they have enough of a consumer base to make it worth their time. While folks are waiting to see if the apps come to make it worth a switch/purchase.

C'mon Palm, get that SDK polished, and while you're at it, sand the rough edges around WebOS, too.

Well, with the everything data plan we had to get with the Pre, Sprint includes voice roaming at no additional cost. That makes SKype pretty useless for Pre/Sprint users.

Skype is useful for Sprint users- not if you have the simply everything plan for $99, but for all plans where they count minutes. 2.95/mo for free calls over wifi would be an instant selling point for me. As I could call over wifi at home or at work during the day with out using my limited minutes. Please Skype- bring it to the Pre! I wonder if Sprint will object...

The real benefits will come when there are international Pre models available and the opportunity to reduce international roaming charges becomes the big draw.
