webOS: Next firmware update on or around 7/22?

We'll give this the rumor treatment even though we were tipped by a reliable source of the same update. But if it's true, according to bigchico68 on the SprintUsers forum -- on or around 7/22, Palm will be pushing out the next webOS updates with some mouth water features like emoticon support, facebook friend sync bug, and more.

Palm Pre Updates

Demo phones on display:

  • Steps are being taken to remove the demo software.
  • The demo software will automatically be removed with the next OTA SWupdate (available on or near 7/22/09).

Email formatting issue:

  • Issue is being worked. A fix will be available in a future software update.

Improvements coming with next OTA software update:

  • Facebook friends will sync with your PC and your Palm Pre
  • Picture messaging enhancements
  • EAS email support that allows an IP address input
  • Ampersand and other symbols can be used in web application input
  • SMS will be able to see all "To" contact properties
  • Emoticon support
  • SMS - Timestamp 24 time capability
  • YouTube search / enter key enables searches
  • Removes the On Device Demo from retail display units

Palm Pre Battery Performance:

  • Never place a piece of paper or other material into the battery well of thePalm Pre or any Sprint device. The Palm Pre battery fits perfectly in the device and adding a piece of paper will not improve device performance.

Nice, but Palm needs a "copy phone number" and "copy email address" feature (such as click and hold on a number in view contact mode so you can copy the phone number to the clipboard), so when you need to text someone a number, you don't have to go to edit the contact to copy phone numbers.

Also we need to be able to copy and paste regular text (unless thats already there). Its bad that you can copy/paste text out of text messages and off the web.

That's all my complaints. Other than that, Love the Phone, keep them updates coming!

Amen re: copy/paste for email and phone numbers. The extra steps of opening for edit and highlighting are extremely inefficient.

Amen re: email formatting (losing carriage returns). Hopefully this is come SOON, since it behaves like a bug/defect vice requirement for new feature.

My biggest issue is also copy/paste. I saw the new iphone commercial showing of their new copy/paste and I don't like that they just came out with that feature and it looks much better than my pre. You could even copy from a website. C'mon palm, give us the update that will put us way ahead of the iphone..

I don't much get the whole "paper in the battery compartment" advisory. I had the infamous fading screen of death on my Pre. The first week or two it was fine, but then after that it started and progressively got worse. I saw postings about the paper trick, so I folded a business card in half, cut out a narrow strip, and taped it on the battery removal tab. It hasn't failed on me since.

If Palm is seriously suggesting that people refrain from doing this, and instead return/exchange their Pre's as defective, I think they're in for a world of hurt. There's clearly no simple fix for this problem as it's a mass-produced design flaw which presumably would affect every Pre eventually. They'd be better off doing some sort of blanket "update" by sending current owners some sort of sanctioned shim device. They could always fix the problem in manufacturing before any more get sent out.

All that aside, I still love my Pre. Though I'll love it even more when that 31st+ app comes out.

the only place i put a piece of paper is under the keyboard to prevent the Pre from wobbling and feeling like a cheap toy when its closed.

I totally agree with the copy/paste complaint. It needs to be universal. I'm glad theyre fixing the Facebook sync.

Did they ever fix the AIM bug? or does it still drain the battery?

Hopefully they're working on an email search feature. DAMN I want that!!! Used it all the time on my treos, really miss it on the pre.

Why would you stick a piece of paper in the battery compartment?

July 21, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAndrew

All I did was replace the battery and do not have that issue anymore.

Wrong again.

@Adam

"on or around 7/22"
we also labeled it 'rumor'.
